How Long Is Beauty Training in FL?
In order to become a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Florida, you first must complete a comprehensive program from a cosmetology school. The course needs to be at least 1,200 hours in length. Since The Florida Board of Cosmetology does not regulate these courses, it’s up to you to make sure that you’re completing the amount of hours necessary.

Exams and Licensing Procedure
After completing the required hours and earning your diploma or certificate, you will then need to complete and submit an Application for Initial License Based on Florida Education. You can go to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to find this application, complete it, and get the information you need to prepare for the cosmetology examinations. The website will also cover any fees you’ll need to pay in order to receive your license.
Once your application has been approved it’s time to take the tests. You’ll receive a written notice from a third party vendor, Pearson VUE, to schedule a date and time for your written exam. Each test lasts about two hours and after you’ve completed and passed them the Department will contact you to issue your brand new license.
All that is left now is to maintain your license. You’ll have to renew it every two years by completing at least sixteen continuing education units and covering the renewal fee. The Department website has a list of approved continuing education providers so finding the classes you need shouldn’t be a chore.
