The beauty industry offers challenges and diverse experiences that go well beyond what you’ll learn in one of Mississippi’s cosmetology schools. You can even start in high school (it’s the best way to learn about cosmetology for free).

You’ll be able to help others feel comfortable and beautiful and use your creativity to create a brighter world for your clients. Once you get your license, there’s no telling how far you’ll go! Make sure the career is a good choice for you before you begin your training.

How Long Is Beauty School In MS?

Mississippi has a thorough education program for budding beauty experts. In addition, they offer two levels of cosmetology training: a cosmetologist or master cosmetologist.

You may also work toward an instructor’s license after you have met the educational requirements. For a general cosmetologist license in Mississippi, you must complete 1500 hours of education and training in a Board-approved program. In addition, you need to be at least 17 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Easily find a program near you with our app:

To become an instructor, you must be at least 21 years or older, with an active license, and complete 2000 hours of instructor training. You can also do two years of practical experience and 750 hours of training. Cosmetology training covers a wide range of subjects, from shampoo and hair styling to nail and skin physiology to manicures and pedicures. There are even courses in business management and professional ethics to look forward to!

Mississippi Cosmetology License

Before taking your exams, you’ll need to submit the completed and notarized Examination Approval form with your photo ID, two passport-sized photos, and confirmation of completion of your training. In addition, you must take one practical and one theory (written) exam. You can take them in any order, but you must arrive at your practical exam with your own kit and equipment. Check the Board’s website for the list of materials you will need. After you pass both exams and your paperwork is approved, you will receive your license!

Licensing Out-Of-State

Mississippi does not have reciprocity or endorsement agreements with any other states. So instead, if you’re looking to transfer your license, you must submit an application of intent to apply for licensure and a record of your training and current license status. The Board will handle your application on a case-by-case basis, depending on training, experience, and the current status of your license.

How To Renew Your Mississippi Beauty License

You will need to renew your license every two years. There are no continuing education requirements to renew your license. Still, if you want to continue to grow and raise your earning power, you may want to work towards a master cosmetologist license.

Once you have a master cosmetologist license, you will be required to have 18 hours of CE per renewal period to qualify for renewal. This ensures you are keeping on top of new techniques and practices.
