Nevada may be a desert, but it’s not exactly barren! Full of luxury spas, and high end hotels, Nevada — and especially Las Vegas — is a great place to begin a career in the beauty industry. To become a successful cosmetologist, makeup specialist or esthetician, you need to start with a program at a registered cosmetology school or college.

How Many Cosmetology Hours Are Required in Las Vegas?

There are two ways to get a cosmetology license in Nevada. The first, is through a registered program at an institution. This means 1600 hours of class time, and practical course work.

Your courses will include training on hair styling, color, chemistry, skin, and nails.

You could also choose, if you live too far from a Board-approved cosmetology school, to pursue an apprenticeship. That means you’ll need to document 3200 hours training experience. Your mentor must be licensed currently by the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology. You must also have filled out the Apprentice Application and be approved before you begin your training hours.

Cosmetology License And Exams in Nevada

However you choose to complete training, you will need to finish your education with three exams.

First the theory test, a written exam which tests your knowledge of a variety of subjects. The Nevada Law Exam covers all laws and regulations pertaining to cosmetology, safety, and sanitation. This exam can be taken on the same day as your written exam. Your practical exam should be administered by your college, or by your employer during your apprenticeship. Once you’ve passed all three of these exams, you can apply for your license.

Out-Of-State License

If you are applying for a Nevada State Cosmetology license from another state, you must offer proof of a license currently in good standing in your home state. You are also required to pass the NIC written exam and Nevada State Law exam. You will also need to fill out the reciprocity application and pay the fee.

Cosmetology License Renewal in Nevada

Once you have your license, it will need to be renewed every two years to four years. The due date is your birthday. You must fill out the renewal form, and pay the application fee. You also must provide proof of 30 continuing education hours during the two-year period. At least 4 hours must focus on infection control. The rest may be on business, technology training, or treatments.

Work Beauty Opportunities In NV

Nevada is home to some of the country’s most profitable hospitality industries. Whether you’re looking to work in a hotel, salon, or spa, there is no shortage of work for a dedicated beauty specialist looking to grow a reputation. Start with your local salons, or try an online job market like nevadajobconnect.com and you’ll soon be full of clients!

… so how much does school cost anyway, and how will you pay for it, and generally speaking just how long will the training take?
