Education Requirements For Hairstylists And Cosmetology Professionals in MB

Length of program and cost varies from province to province but Manitoba requires that you get at least 1060 hours of study to become an esthetician, hairstylist, or cosmetologist. You will also need to take a Red Seal Interprovincial Theory Exam, and a practical exam which will be set by your school. These days more and more schools are offering online classes as a way to get your hours.

You may also elect to take an apprenticeship, which requires 1500 hours of on the job training. You will still need to write both exams to qualify for licensure.

Get Your MB Hairdressing License

Once you’ve written your exams and proven your hours of training, you will be given your license. As long as you have a high school diploma and your certification by the Manitoba Trade Association, you will be free to work in Manitoba.

Please note that nail technicians, estheticians and hair stylists are under separate certification hours, but you can work toward all three simultaneously.

Out-Of-Province Licensees

Since the Red Seal exam you take as part of your certification is Interprovincial, you may not be required to prove your credentials further if you are going to another province to work.

Check with that province’s board to ensure that you meet all the requirements and that further training will not be needed.
