Take a look at our tools page to see what kind of stuff you’ll need to be a barber student. Not long ago all that was required was a pair of shears — scissors to some — or even a just a sharp knife (which could also be used for another barber’s task not long ago: surgery). Nowadays the list of a professional barber’s implements is quite long.
- Shears
- Clippers
- A razor – preferably a straight razor
- Capes
- Barbicide
- The venerable barber’s chair
- … and so on

There are a number of criteria to be met before you get official certification to be a barber in Florida.
Florida Barber License
Licensing requirements are similar to other states such as California. The state’s regulating agency controls what you need to do. Obviously you’ll need to complete schooling as mentioned above, but what do you do after you’ve graduated? The answer: do a couple of more exams to satisfy the board that you are a capable.
Once that is done, then and only then, will they issue you your license. The license you get will depend on whether you are qualified to perform chemical services or not. If yes then you will get a full barber’s license. If no, then you will get a restricted barber’s license.
Florida Barber License Renewal
Every other year you will need to renew your certification. To do so will require a fee, as well as some continuing education.
The CE consists of infection control. You’ve already learned it as part of your standardized barber’s training at school, but it is important enough that FL requires you to do a refresher every time you relicense.
