If you are at least 17 years old, and have completed your high school education, you are eligible for your license in cosmetology. Before you can be licensed, you must complete a program of at least 2100 hours of training. For sure, that’s a lot of hours of study, but if you are passionate about the field the time will fly 🙂

The training is not free unless you do the course while still in high school.

This will include courses in:

  • skin care
  • electrolysis
  • salon management
  • makeup application
  • hair styling techniques

Your education will include hours spent in the classroom, as well as practical training, with mannequins, and then with real people. Use the app below to find a college near you:

Your Nebraska Cosmetology License

After you’ve finished your training, you’ll need to take your exams before you can be licensed.

Nebraska requires a written exam, as well as a state laws exam, which covers the laws and regulations relating to cosmetology.

To apply for the exam, you’ll need to provide proof of age, your record at your chosen school or program. Also required is any record of work in the health industry previously, which will be considered as part of your jurisprudence exam.

Reciprocity

If you have a current license in another state, and at least 2100 hours training, you can apply for reciprocity to be licensed in Nebraska. If your training hours are less than 2100, you can replace 100 hours of training for each month of full-time experience, as long as the experience was gained in the last five years. You will also need to pay the fee to transfer the license.

License Renewal and CE For Nebraska Cosmetologists

Your license will need to be renewed each even-numbered year on December 31st. The state board requires at least 8 hours of continuing education during each licensure period to keep your license active. You’ll also need to pay a renewal fee with your application.
