How Long Will It Take To Get Trained At A Hawaii Cosmetology Academy?

If you’re looking to become a cosmetologist in Hawaii, you will need to complete a training program.

You can choose to attend a beauty school course, or a college degree program.

You must be at least 16 years old and have a high school diploma in order to enroll. If your still in high school check to see if you can get head start.

Your formal training program should cover sanitation, hygiene, and state laws and regulations, along with hair cutting, colouring, and makeup techniques. Though school isn’t usually free you can often make it easier financially by learning on weekends or getting aid.

Training at a school will require you to clock at least 1800 hours in total, while an apprenticeship will take double that. So the first thing you need to do is find a place to train you. Enter your ZIP below to do just that:

License

Once your training hours are complete, you can apply for a temporary permit for as long as one year. This allows you to keep working and learning for the duration of three exam periods. You must have already submitted your license application and been approved for your exam in order to qualify.

The exam is a closed book, 100 question exam which lasts about 120 minutes. If you pass, you will receive instructions from Prometric to apply for your license, and if you fail, you will receive instructions for your re-examination. Your results take two weeks to process and mail to you.

Hawaii Cosmetology License Transfer

Hawaii does not require application for licensing out of state. Instead, you must prove that you are currently licensed in another state, and have at least one year experience working as a hairstylist, or beauty specialist.

Keep Your License Current

Your license needs to be renewed every two years before December 31st on odd-numbered years. There is no continuing education requirement, but you are encouraged to keep up to date with sanitation and state regulation practices, and new technology and styles.

Post-Graduation Job Hunt

Working in Hawaii as a beauty operator, hair stylist, or cosmetologist is a dream come true. Not only is it a gorgeous place to work, but it’s also one of the biggest industries for Hawaii, when compared to growth in other states, and also when comparing salaries.
