Education Requirements: Hours at New York Cosmetology & Hair Schools

In order to be licensed under the New York Cosmetology Board, you must complete 1000 hours of education and training. That may seem like a lot of hours, but some other states require more than 2,000! Less hours means less cost too. You may even pay nothing if you can manage to get your training through high school.

Your program may be at a licensed cosmetology school, or through a college degree program. But it will include courses on FDA Law, Safety and Health, Anatomy and Physiology, as well as practical courses on hair care, styling, makeup treatments, and skin treatments.

Get Your New York Cosmetology License

Once you’ve completed your education, you will need to apply to take your written and practical exam. This comes with a fee, and can be submitted online. You’ll need to pass the NIC written and practical exams with a 70% or higher in order to qualify for your license.

Out-Of-State

If you have a cosmetology license in another state you must check online to see if your state licensure qualifies under New York’s reciprocity license. If it does, you may apply following the instructions found online.

If not, you may apply for a New York license based on “education and experience.” You need to have accrued five years of licensed cosmetology work experience, and provide the original certification from the original licensing agency.

You may also be asked for tax return information to prove you have been working as a cosmetologist or beauty specialist.

How To Renew Your NY Beauty License

New York’s renewal cycle for a cosmetology license is four years. Currently, there are no continuing education requirements to have your license renewed. However, as you continue to impress your clients, you may choose to grow your skills with new courses, additional training, and sharpening your skills.

Once you have at least 2 years experience, you may also choose to become an instructor at a school training the next crop of hairstylists and makeup artists yourself.
