How Long Does Barber Training Take in RI?

A Rhode Island barber training program needs to be at least 1500 hours to qualify for licensing. Barber school is a great way to fast track your learning. You will learn about many different skills.

Your Rhode Island Barber License

Once you have completed your course requirements or apprenticeship hours, you will need to pass your licensing exams. Rhode Island candidates are subject to the NIC exams: a two-part exam consisting of both a written and practical exam. You must receive a score of 70% or higher on both exams to qualify for your barber license.

License Already But From Out-Of-State?

If your home state requires 1500 hours of barber school training, and you have passed the NIC Barbering exams, you may be eligible for license by endorsement in Rhode Island.

You will need to submit a copy of your license, and verification of your current license. You must submit the verification directly from the previous licensing board. Your license must also be in good standing, with no disciplinary action.

Renew Your License

Your certification must be renewed every two years. You will need to submit your renewal form online, along with your fee. There are no continuing education hours required to maintain your license in Rhode Island. You do need to be licensed for at least one year before you can open a shop of your own. Continuing education can help you increase your clientele, and upgrade your skills as you are working.
