Indiana’s Barber Licensing Procedure

Most states barber boards will arrange the testing of potential new licensees with a third-party agency. Not so in Indiana! The practical licensing exam is performed by the school at which you complete you studies and the results are passed on to the board.

On the other hand, the written exam is administered by the state. Your school can help you prepare for it but they do not oversee the procedure. To take the written you need to apply for it and then schedule it with Pearson VUE.

Both exams must be passed with a score of 75% or better.

Licenses for Barbers Moving From Another State

If you have training from another state that has the same or better licensing requirements you can apply for reciprocity. You’ll need t prove you’ve graduated and been licensed in your state of origin as well as provide a fee.

Renewal

Once you have a license it is easy to keep it. You only need to renew once every four years by paying a fee and filling out a form.

In order to find a good position with a good starting salary you can do the usual job hunting techniques like looking online and letting contacts know you are on the hunt. But you may not even need to search as oftentimes your school will help with placement.
