Nail technicians handle all sorts of the aspects of making sure that clients’ finger and toenails are not only beautiful, but also healthy. This requires a good bit of training in all aspects of nail care as well as nail art.

In British Columbia, your first step might be to search nail technician schools that you want to apply to join.

After you complete the course of training offered by your chosen school (there is no set length for the program or number of hours so it is possible to do nail training online), you probably feel ready to jump right in.

There are no regulatory requirements in British Columbia in order to begin work as a nail technician. You may find, however, that some municipalities may not allow you to purchase a business license until you pass the exam offered by BeautyCouncil.

The BC Nail Tech Exams

To apply to BeautyCouncil to take the nail technician exam, you’ll need to be able to provide proof of at least 400 hours of school training.

Keep in mind that a great deal of the training you will experience involves both training in a classroom setting as well as hands-on hours. It is really important to your ability to take the exam to make sure that the hours of your program meet or exceed the 400 hours required by BeautyCouncil. It’s always a good idea to do nail tech continuing education to keep up with trends and refresh your knowledge.

It’s important to note that you don’t have to go to nail technician schools in British Columbia in order to take the BeautyCouncil tests. You’ll still need to provide proof of training, which will need to be properly notarized in order to be accepted.

Is Beauty Council Membership A Good Idea?

Once you take and pass the exam, you’ll receive a certification. You may also want to become a member of BeautyCouncil, which allows you to meet other beauty professionals and take advantage of continuing education opportunities. You’ll also be listed as a Certified Cosmetology Professional in the BeautyCouncil Registry of Beauty Professionals. This can be a big boost for your business, especially when you’re just starting out.

Another certification offered by BeautyCouncil is the BeautySafe certification. The BeautySafe program ensures that you’re up to speed on all current safety concerns within the beauty industry and helps you to boost your skills in beauty safety. Once certified, you’re able to let all of your clients know that you’ve got their safety at the top of your list of concerns.
