Find out more about nail schools here.

Being a nail tech isn’t as easy as giving a really great manicure. Even though that helps too, you’ve got to be personable, trustworthy, and have a great eye for color and style. If this sounds like you, studying at a Mississippi beauty school can open doors for a bright new career. All you have to do, is meet your license requirements, and you’ll be able to create great looks, and meet fantastic people! You can even upgrade to a medical nail tech in some states.

Education

To meet Mississippi’s licensing requirements, you need to enroll in a program at least 350 hours long. Your program should be at least nine weeks, and should include at least 85 hours of theoretical studies, and 265 hours of practical study. They will cover everything from general sciences, basic chemistry, and salon management, as well as manicure and pedicure techniques, and equipment usage and sanitation.

Nowadays you can even get nail training online, but check with the state board to see if such a program is approved by them.

License

To get your license as a manicurist in the state of Mississippi, you must be at least 17 years old, with a high school diploma, or GED. Once you’ve completed your nail technician program at an approved school, you will need to schedule your written and practical exam, as well as completing your interview, and filling out the application.

You need to take and pass the practical exam before the theory exam can be scheduled. The practical exam allows you to demonstrate practical knowledge of sanitation, nail application, and proper cleanup and safety procedures, among other things.

If you pass this exam, you move on to the multiple choice written exam. Once you’ve passed this exam, you are eligible for license.

Mississippi does not have reciprocity agreements with other states. This means that if you are currently licensed as a nail technician in another state, and you’re looking to move to Mississippi to work, you will need to prove that you have at least 350 hours at an accredited program, and you must sit the Mississippi nail tech exams.

All Mississippi cosmetology licenses, including those for a manicurist, must be renewed every two years. There are no continuing education hours required, but if you choose to complete at least 16 hours of continuing education in your field, you may apply to become a master manicurist, which allows you to increase your pay, and even teach!

MS Nail Tech Jobs

Mississippi salons and spas are a great place to start a rewarding career.

If you decide to take the plunge into owning your own salon, you may opt to work toward a Master Manicurist license, and rent out space in an established salon, like Bloom Salon & Spa in Southaven, or the Studio in Hattiesburg, to build a client base strong enough to start your own business. If you do open your own business you can start retail selling of nail products as well.

Whatever you choose, your future is full of promise.
