Working as a manicurist is a great way to earn extra cash while gaining a cosmetology or esthetics license. It can also help you start out a great career on it’s own, and even lead to owning your own business!
Rhode Island beauty schools can help you get started on the path to financial independence and flexible work hours you’ve always wanted.
You’ll love learning the ins and outs of the nail technician’s job, and help you meet great people who can set you on your path, to get your license, and create more opportunities!
Education Hours
In order to be eligible for a manicurist license in Rhode Island, you must be at least 18 years old. You must also have graduated from high school. Your next step is to find a beauty school or cosmetology program that includes at least 300 hours of manicurist training and study. You’ll learn both practical and theoretical techniques that cover safety, hygiene, health, nail structure, and proper procedures for manicures and pedicures, among other things. You will need to complete a full program, including writing your exams before you can be licensed.
License
Once you have completed your program, you must have your school send your official transcripts to the board. You’ll also need to submit a completed application for licensure, and proof of your educational transcripts, and age. The Rhode Island manicurist license is a two-part test, including a written and practical component.
The written exam is a multiple choice exam, while the practical involves using a mannequin hand to test your skills in sanitation, safety, and more. You must complete both parts of the exam with a 70% grade or higher to be eligible for a license.
Out-Of-State
If you already have your nail technician license in another state, you may be eligible for a nail technician license in Rhode Island if you can meet certain stipulations.
You must prove your high school diploma or GED, and completion of a nail technician education program. You must also prove that you have passed exams in your home state, and completed at least 300 hours of education.
Renew Your License
You must renew your manicurist license every two years. The Rhode Island Department of Health will mail you your license renewal form a month before your license is set to expire.
No continuing education hours are required for renewal, but you must renew before the deadline to avoid paying the extra fees for an expired license.
Work
Once you finally have your license, you will have plenty of work opportunities. All across the country, the beauty service industries are on the rise. You can find clients through working at established shops.
Once you’ve been working for at least two years, you can submit an application for Shop Space, and get your own place, cultivating your own clients, at your own nail salon. Until then, job search sites such as www.employri.org will help you on your way.
