Beauty is an exciting industry full of challenges. To become a top makeup artist takes dedication, work, and a positive attitude. For a job in this ever-growing industry, you’re going to love working and studying in Oklahoma. Getting involved in Oklahoma’s growing beauty scene is as simple as navigating one of Oklahoma’s many beauty schools, and work toward your license. After that, it’s simply a matter of building up your client base, and immersing yourself in the skills it takes to become a great makeup artist! Take note though that if your interest is theatrical makeup you may need to go out of state to get a really top-notch education.

How Long Does Makeup Training Take in OK?

In Oklahoma, makeup artists are referred to as cosmeticians, and they carry their own licensing. You will need to graduate from a Board-approved school offering at least 600 hours, with at least 20 credit hours of cosmetician classes.

If you can’t get access to one of Oklahoma’s beauty schools, you can take a 1200 hour apprenticeship instead. You’ll take classes in everything from bacteriology, sanitation and sterilization, makeup application, curling irons combs, and other hair arranging techniques.

You even have the opportunity to learn salon management and development, so you’ll be able to position yourself as a salon owner once you’ve had some experience in the industry. But #1 is finding a school:

License For Makeup in OK

Once you have finished your studies or completed the hours for your apprenticeship, you can apply to take your exams. Oklahoma requires that you pass with a 75% or higher on their state exam. This is a single exam consisting of both a written and practical portion.

Moving From Out-Of-State?

Currently, if you have a license in good standing in another state, you can apply for a transfer to an Oklahoma license by paying the transfer application and applying online.

You will also need to prove that your home state’s training and testing is equal to or greater than Oklahoma’s requirements.

Renew Your License

Specialized certificate courses in makeup do not require renewal. But a full cosmetician license should be renewed every two years by your birth month.

You don’t need any continuing education classes in order to renew your license, but the more you continue building your skills, the more you will be able to offer clients.

Makeup Employment

Oklahoma’s beauty scene is growing just as fast as the industry in other parts of the country, with an expected growth rate of about 20% by 2020 though Covid-19 may have reduce that number.

The site okjobmatch.com can offer you the best first jobs after graduation, including work in the Oklahoma City Ballet, one of the amazing salons in Tulsa, or the many arts fests around the states whose performers are always looking for makeup artists to keep them looking great!

Wherever you’re looking to develop your passion for makeup into a full-blown career, you can find it in Oklahoma.
