The beauty industry is all about comfort and confidence. If you love making others feel their most confident, work as a makeup artist might be a great opportunity to make some good money, while meeting plenty of interesting people. Massachusetts beauty schools can help you on your way, and this article will help you prepare for the steps you need to get your license.
How Long Does It Take To Get Makeup Schooling in Massachusetts?
The fastest way to complete makeup artist training in MA is through a registered esthetics program.
Esthetics covers skin care and treatments, as well as makeup application. A basic program in Massachusetts must include at least 300 hours of training, over at least 3 months. More hours will be required if you want training as a theatrical MUA.
You may be tempted to look into a 300-hour course to save time, but a 600-hour course is the requirement in most other states, and will allow you some flexibility later on. It’s also a more thorough course load with extra makeup classes, which makes more space for advanced makeup techniques and color theory, along with basic skin care, bacteriology, and even business courses, to help you on your way to your rewarding career. Getting Your Massachusetts Makeup License
Once you can prove you are at least 17 years old, and have completed at least a 10th grade education, along with your 300+ hours of esthetics training, you will qualify for a makeup artist license as soon as you can pass your exams.
The Massachusetts state board is subject to the NIC exams, the National-Interstate Cosmetologist exams, which include a written and practical exam. You must receive at least a 75% in both exams to qualify for license.
Moving to MA From Out-Of-State?
The Massachusetts state board does not allow for license reciprocity. If you plan on working in Massachusetts as an esthetician or makeup artist, you’ll need to pay an out of state application fee, submit the application, and sit the written and practical exams.
Renew Your Makeup License in MA
You must renew your esthetician license every two years to continue working as a makeup artist. You won’t need any continuing education to keep your license active, but you do need to pay the renewal fee. The date of your renewal is the end of your birth month every two years.
Employment in Beauty Professions in MA
Massachusetts has a thriving hospitality and tourism industry that is perfect for a budding makeup artist.
Beginning your career in salons and spas means building the reputation and client base you will need to open your own establishment, or go freelance. It may also offer you some opportunities in theatre, television and broadcasting.
Wherever your career takes you, finding the right makeup artist school, and the right job to start you off is a great positive start.
