Utah Nail Technician Schools

Your education begins with 300 hours of study and practice with various nail technician skills. Utah requires a heavy emphasis on safety and sanitation, so along with manicure techniques and polish, you will learn chemistry and physiology of the nails and hands, personal safety, diseases and disorders, and courses on the immune system. Once you’ve completed 300 hours or more, you can apply for your exams, and obtain your license through the board.

License

Once you’ve completed your studies, you will be required to sit for two exams for your license. Your written exam is an hour and a half long and covers physiology and chemistry, as well as nail service tools and other technology you will need to be familiar with. Your practical exam tests your ability to perform tasks in a supervised setting, including your sanitation and safety procedures. You must pass both exams in order to be eligible for a license.

Already Licensed But From Out-Of-State?

Utah does not allow reciprocity, but if you have a nail technician’s license, they may be willing to transfer. If your current license is active and in good standing, and your home state’s requirements are equal or greater than Utah, you may apply for a transfer via an online application, with proof of your education, current license, and exam scores from your state. Transfers are granted on a case-by-case basis.

Renewal

Once you have a license, you will need to renew every two years. No continuing education hours are required unless you are an instructor. Your date of renewal is September 30th, and you must complete your application, including fees, before that date.

Jobs

Utah is home to some well-known spas and resorts, making it a great place to work in the beauty industry. If working at a high-end shop doesn’t appeal, you can always open your own nail salon. Once you have been working for at least a year, you can apply for a permit for your own space. Before that, you should take the time to build a client list, with a job where you can absorb and further your skills.
