Regulations implemented by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetologists state that nail professionals must first have the right education before advertising themselves as pro nail techs. Enter your ZIP below to find a good school near you and train to become a licensed MA nail technician.

They must be at least 17 years of age, have at least passed their second year of high school, and have gone through a 100-hour course of manicurist training at a Board-approved school.

This course will cover aspects like first aid, professional ethics, state laws, hygiene, anatomy, artificial nail techniques, safety, and more. This work will take place on either a mannequin hand or a real-life hand.

Afterward, the school will then provide you with everything that you need to apply for your professional license. It is also up to you to ensure that someone from your school completes the “School Certification” section of the application.

Submitted applications are sent to Pearson Vue, who are the administrators of all nail technicians throughout the state of Massachusetts. It is through them that you will schedule your examination at one of their three main centers. The exam itself costs $120, but there is also a license fee of $68, which you must bring with you to pay on the day of the exam.

The written exam takes approximately 90 minutes to complete and consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The main topics include rules/regulations/safety, nail structure/analysis, professional services, and nail enhancements. Once you complete the exam, you will receive your score. In order to pass this particular portion, you must score a 75% or better.

The practical exam also takes around 90 minutes to complete, and you will be given five tasks to perform on an adult model that you must bring with you. You must score an 80% or better to pass this exam. Your license fee will then be collected and you will then be issued a photo certificate and can then begin practicing immediately.
