A career in beauty means being flexible, creative, and confident. There are plenty of ways into Minnesota’s thriving beauty industry, but one of the most popular is study as a makeup artist.

The right schools can teach you colour theory, and a variety of techniques and styles, and even help you specialize in something like theatrical & film makeup.

As a MUA your future depends on your own ability to grow and evolve, as well as adding creative touches and a style all your own. And it all begins when you get your license, and start working in this exciting industry.

How Long Will Makeup Training Take In MN?

Like other states such as California and Michigan, Minnesota requires you to become a licensed skin care specialist before you can work in the makeup industry. That means getting an education at a beauty school offering an esthetician program.

Typically, esthetician programs are about 600 hours, and consist in courses in skin hygiene, facials, colour theory, and makeup techniques. After you finish your studies, you’ll need to take your exams. Use your ZIP to find schools closest to you:

Get Your Minnesota Makeup License

Your exams consist of both the written and practical tests. You’ll need to score at least 70% to pass and acquire your license. Remember to bring ID, and poof of your citizenship to both exams, and bring your own kit and equipment to the practical.

The state also requires you to take an exam pertaining to the laws and rules of the Minnesota State cosmetology board. You can apply for your official certification, i.e., your license, as soon as you receive your scores from the Board.

Licensing  Process if You Are Moving From Out-Of-State

If you currently hold an active license in good standing in another state, you can apply for license reciprocity in Minnesota.

You must have an esthetics license to work as a makeup artist in the state.

If your home state has a specialized makeup license, you will not qualify if you do not have at least an esthetician license, but you may if you have your cosmetology license, as long as the educational requirements include at least 600 hours of training, and you can provide exam scores.

Renewing Your MN Makeup License

You need to renew your esthetician license every three years to stay active as a makeup artist.

Minnesota requires you to attend school for four hours of continuing education during those three years, to keep your license active, to update safety, laws and sanitation training.
