More detail about makeup artist schools.
Are you interested in the world of beauty? Do you have a passion for makeup, and helping others look their best? If you love the idea of working as a makeup artist, Nova Scotia is a great place to learn the trade. Nova Scotia is full of beauty schools which can promise your license in only a few months. It also is one of the few provinces that offers specialized makeup artist licensing, meaning you can be sure to find a program that focuses on exactly the area of beauty you are looking to explore.
Education
In order to become a licensed makeup artist in Nova Scotia, you will need to attend a makeup specific program of at least 300 hours. You may also choose to take an eyelash technician course, or even a full esthetician course of 1500 hours, to expand your portfolio and your knowledge.
You will learn a variety of techniques and standards of practice in Nova Scotia’s beauty industry, including day and night makeup, special occasion makeup, and makeup for theater and broadcasting. You will also learn about safety and sanitation, including bacteriology, and skin conditions and their effects on makeup.
License
To get your license after you’ve completed your program, you will need to compete the provincial exam as set by the Nova Scotia Cosmetology Board. This includes both a written and practical skills test of everything you have learned. Your school may also issue a written or practical exam of its own, depending on what you have covered in your course load.

Out-Of-Province Licensing
The best way to be licensed if you are not originally from Nova Scotia, is to take the Nova Scotia board exam. You may also be eligible through the interprovincial standardized exam through the Red Seal program. You must submit a credential review application to the Nova Scotia Cosmetology Association.
The Credential Review Applications are evaluated on an individual basis. The process can take up to six to eight weeks. You must fill out the form in its entirety, including supporting documentation, and the application fee. If you will be in the province for less than a year, you may also apply for a Visiting Cosmetologist license, which allows you to work for a year or less. Visit the Cosmetology Association’s website to see if you are eligible.
Renew Your License
All Nova Scotia cosmetology licenses, including makeup artist, must be renewed every year before December 31st. No continuing education hours are required, but the association offers many opportunities for continuing your education, including a Master cosmetologist license, or instructors license, giving you plenty of opportunity to expand your career.
Work
Becoming a makeup artist takes drive, determination, and a bright personality. Whether you’re establishing a home-based makeup business, working to become a Master cosmetologist, or looking to work in film, television and theatre, Nova Scotia’s licensing requirements mean you’ll get some of the best training in the country.
What comes next depends on you. Can you secure clients who will keep coming back? Are you looking to expand your skills into skin care, to work in a salon or hotel? Or will you go for glamour, and join in on the independent artist scene, assisting wedding photographers, working in theatre, or even in broadcasting?
Wherever you go, that first job is crucial. Check with the Nova Scotia Cosmetology board for your options, or online resources like jobbank.gc.ca to help you in your search.
