Find out more about nail technician schools here.

If you have a desire attend school to become a licensed nail technician in the state of New York, you can start working toward your dream if you are at least seventeen (17) years old and have a basic education.

The profession is expected to grow faster than average (www.bls.gov), and New York is an exciting place to work. A candidate with formal education is more likely to get hired. It’s also possible to get some nail training online these days.

How Long Does Nail School Take in NY?

Here’s how to go about getting your license: The state board of New York requires training at an accredited school or college for at least 250 hours of formal education. Find the school closest to you by entering your ZIP in our app:

The curriculum includes classes about nail art, nail wraps, scrubs, and treatments, but there are also courses about running a business, infection control, and anatomy.

At the end of the training, the school will fill out the Affirmation of New York State Approved Schooling on your license application, allowing you to take your exam for licensure.

NY Nail Tech License Procedure

There is sometimes a short wait period between the time of submission of the application and the completion of exams, so you are allowed to apply for a temporary permit. The temporary permit is for between two to six months and will allow you to work while you are waiting to take your exam. Enter your ZIP below to see what schools are available nearby and come to an informed decision about where you’d like to study to become a licensed NY professional.

The licensure exam has two parts: a written and a practical.

The written exam is multiple choice and takes up to two and a half hours. It covers various subjects such as safety, sanitation, and New York rules and regulations. The practical exam will require you to perform certain tasks such as table set-up, basic manicure, and tip application just to name a few. You must score at least a 70% on both parts of the exam to pass.

Once you have passed these exams, you will be issued a license and be ready to begin your career.
