How Long Is The Makeup Training In Utah?

Your makeup artist career begins with deciding which license you’re looking to get. Though Utah, like TX, doesn’t require a specific makeup artist license. Instead, you’ll need to choose between a basic esthetician license, which specializes in skin care and treatment, and a cosmetology license, which is all about many aspects of beauty.

You may also choose an apprenticeship for either licenses. Esthetician licenses are shorter, and require 600 hours of class, or 800 hours of apprenticeship. Find the schools closest to you using our app below:

Cosmetologist licenses may take longer, with a required 1600 hours of approved classes, or 2500 hours of apprenticeship. But with a cosmetologist license, you will learn much more about the beauty industry as a whole, including classes on hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, and laser and light therapy.

Once you graduate from your chosen school, the state board requires that you take the National Interstate Council written and practical exams. You can apply online, and PSI testing service will keep you updated on the nearest testing center’s exam times and dates. Remember to bring your own mannequin to the theory exams. You will also be required to take an open-book test on Utah’s cosmetologist laws and rules.

If you have a current license in another state, you may be free to work as a makeup artist in Utah if you can prove your current license is in good standing, and your home state has similar requirements to those required by Utah, you can be considered eligible for a reciprocity license.

You must apply via the State Board’s website, and pay the fee. If your home state has a lower required hours of education, you may be still be eligible if you can prove appropriate work experience hours. In this case, you will need to submit a Verification of Work Experience.

Your Utah license renewal date depends on your current active license. Cosmetologists must renew their license biannually, by September 30th of every odd numbered years. No continuing education is required, but keeping your skills up to date with speciality courses will give your career a boost.
