How Much Training is Required For Certified Makeup Artists in NV?

There are two paths to becoming a makeup artist in Nevada, according to the Nevada State Board. You may choose to become a demonstrator of cosmetics like foundations, mascara, nail polish and so on. That means you can sell and work in department store makeup counters. Not exciting, but still good steady work, that allows for flexibility.

Or you can choose an aesthetician license, which allows you to work as a makeup artist and skin care specialist in the state. This is how it is in most states like NY and CA. In either case you must be at least 18 years old, and have a 10th grade education, as well as passing a course on sanitation, and a qualification test or examination, depending on the license you’re looking at. You must complete at least 900 hours of aesthetics training to become a licensed esthetician.

Get Your Nevada Makeup License

If you’re on the path to become a licensed esthetician, and work in skin care and makeup artistry, the next step after your training hours is to complete the National Interstate Cosmetology Examinations, and the Nevada State Laws and Rules exam.

The NIC includes both a written and practical examination, and you can take all three exams on the same day. Once you’ve completed and passed your exams, you will be issued a license, and can start work.

Moving To NV From Out-of-state?

If you currently hold a license in good standing in another state, but are looking to move to Nevada to work, don’t worry! You’ll be able to apply via reciprocity. You must prove the validity of your existing license, and prove that you’ve taken the National written exam.

If your state requires its own exam, you may be required to take the NIC written exam before you can be licensed. You must also take the Nevada Laws and Rules exam.

Renewing Your NV Beauty License

Nevada’s state licenses must be renewed every two years. You will receive notification in the mail before your due date. You will need to provide proof of four hours of continuing education from your school, including at least one hour in infection control or sanitation.

Employment As A MUA in NV

Nevada’s beauty industry is as diverse as its population. The city centres are great places to find high end resorts, theaters and live shows, which are always looking for work, especially on or near Vegas.

The more remote areas of Nevada often make perfect backdrops for Hollywood films, so it’s another great option for makeup artists. Spas and resorts in Nevada are always looking for skin care specialists, and you’ll have plenty of great choices for your first big job.
