Education Requirements

Unlike other states, Michigan allows for a separate license for makeup artists. It’s a limited esthetician/cosmetologist. This means you study less rigorously than a full cosmetology or esthetics program. You must complete at least 400 hours of aesthetician training to work as a makeup artist. You must also prove that you are 17 years or older, and have at least a ninth grade education. You may also choose to work as an apprentice. In that case, you will have to prove at least 600 hours of practice time before you can qualify for exams. Find a school close by using our app below:

Makeup License in Michigan

Once you’ve proven your educational requirements or apprenticeship has been met, you can apply to the state of Michigan for your written and practical exams. For the practical, you must have your model approved, and they must be at least 18 years old. You will also be required to bring your own kit, and supply all your own supplies. You must pass the exams with at least a 70%.

Out-Of-State Applicants

If you currently hold and active license in another state, you may be eligible for license reciprocity in Michigan if you can prove your home state’s education requirements are as high or higher than in Michigan.

If you do not have the same hours of college training required by the Michigan State Board, you may substitute six months of work experience for 100 hours of training. You must prove your work experience and educational background along with your reciprocal esthetician license application.

Michigan Makeup License Renewal

Though your license is not the same as a full esthetician license, you will still need to renew your license every two years. No continuing education at school is required. However, getting a full cosmetologist or esthetician license will have a huge impact on your future prospects and your hireability later on.

Makeup Career in Michigan

The Michigan department of labor has projected that job opportunities for makeup artists and estheticians are on the rise.

With a full esthetician license, you can easily find work at a top salon spa, or even a medical facility.

As a makeup artist, you may choose to specialize in theatre makeup, special effects, or any other speciality. You can also help make a bride’s special day, take part in a memorable prom night, or just make your clients look and feel great every day. You can even train to pass on your skills to others at school by becoming a makeup teacher.
