Schooling Requirements For Makeup In Maryland

Makeup artists in Maryland don’t have a separate license. But they do have to be properly trained as estheticians in Maryland to work as a makeup artist. Getting your esthetician’s license means studying for at least 600 hours in a registered program — easily find one near you with our app below:

You may also choose to take an apprenticeship course lasting at least 6 months, with no less than 30 hours a week, under supervision.

Your courses will cover everything from manual and machine facials to waxing and hair removal, as well as various makeup application techniques. You’ll also cover lots of theatrical styles of makeup if you choose such a course.

Getting Your Maryland Makeup License

Once you’ve completed your study or apprenticeship period, you can take your written and practical exams. You must apply online, and remember to bring your own kit, as well as ID to the practical exam.

You need ID for the written exam as well. After you have passed both, you will receive your grades and notice from the Maryland Board and apply for your license online.

License If Moving From Out-Of-State

If you currently hold an esthetician license in another state, you will need to fill out a licensure by endorsement application providing proof of your written and practical esthetics exams, certification of your current license, and proof of completion of your education.

If your home state’s education requirements are similar or greater than Maryland, you’ll be licensed to work as a makeup artist in Maryland.

Renewing Your License

Maryland makeup artists have to be licensed as estheticians in order to work. You will need to renew your esthetician license every two years. You will receive a notice in the mail about 60 days before your license expires. You can renew your esthetician license by mail, or online, and pay the fee. No continuing education is required.

MD Work For Makeup Artists

Maryland is home of many celebrity makeup artists. They may work in the political sector, or in the entertainment industry. Even better, they may work with famous photographers to give everyone from brides, to pageant queens, to independent artists the look they deserve. Whatever you’re hoping to achieve in your exciting new career, it all starts with finding the right opportunity at the right time.
