How Many School-Hours Does Makeup In Hawaii Take?

Hawaii offers two beauty operator license categories that mean an education in makeup artistry and application. You can either get a cosmetologist degree, or an esthetician license. Estheticians specialize in skin care and massage, as well as makeup and spa. It takes 600 hours of study or 1200 hours of work as an apprentice. Check schools near you by entering your ZIP:

To become a cosmetologist, and study everything from hair dressing, to skin care, to manicure and pedicure work, you will need to complete an 1800 hour program, or a 3600 hour apprenticeship. There are no programs that specialize specifically in makeup artistry, so either of these paths will lead to proficiency in makeup artistry.

Getting Your Hawaii Makeup Artist License

You must be at least 16 years old, and have a high school diploma before you can become an esthetician or cosmetologist in Hawaii. Once you’ve completed your education, or logged your completed apprenticeship hours, you will be able to apply for a temporary permit. The temporary permit allows you to work while waiting for your exams. You’ll need to sit your written exam in the year after you graduate to remain eligible, without needing to requalify.

Out-Of-State Licensees

If you have a current makeup artist license, esthetician or cosmetology license in another state, you may submit an application for license reciprocity to the Hawaii State Board. You’ll need to prove that you have a current license, have one full year of work experience, and have studied at least the 600 hours required by Hawaii standards for an esthetics license in the state. You’ll also need to prove your high school education.

Renewing Your License

The date of renewal for a beauty operator license in Hawaii is Dec 31st. Your license needs to be renewed every odd numbered year. If you do not renew in time, your license will become foreit, and you will need to go through a reinstatement process to keep working legally.
