Study & Training Requirements

Colorado is considered a global leader in the creative industries. Part of this is because of their great educational programs for creative vocations like cosmetology and makeup.

Unlike many states, Colorado actually has a separate makeup artist license, and their programs are rigorous and make sure you go into this growing industry with the experience to take on exactly the kind of work you’re looking for. A makeup artist program in Colorado is 600 hours of class time and practical training, which covers makeup application, bacteriology, skincare services, and hair removal. Some schools will cover theatre & special effects more than others.

License

Once you have completed your program, you need to schedule two state licensure exams, the written and practical. The state board stipulates that you will need to schedule online through PSI examinations and remember to bring your own kit and mannequin to your practical. Once you have passed both exams, you are eligible for license.

Many states do not require a specific license for makeup artistry. If you have work experience in the industry, you may be able to replace some of the educational requirements. However, you will be required to sit the Colorado theory and practical exams to be licensed as a makeup artist in the state.

Renewal

After you have earned your license, you must renew every even-numbered year before March 31st. There is a fee to complete your license renewal form, but no continuing education is required.

Employment

Colorado’s vibrant art scene is great for the budding makeup artist. As a licensed makeup artist, you’ll be able to find work in the tourist industry, in department stores, as a freelance makeup artist working with a photography or film studio, or even working with a theatre company. Once you have your degree, you’ll be able to choose the path that most appeals to you, whether it be speciality makeup, or just renting a chair and freelancing. It all begins when you dip your toe in this industry with your first job.
