What Are The Education Hours?
To be a makeup artist in Arkansas, you will need to obtain an esthetician license. That means a formal schooling course at a post secondary institution that lasts at least 600 hours. You will need to be 16 years old and have at least a 10th grade education to apply for a esthetician license.
The program will include everything from anatomy of the skin, bacteriology, skin treatments, facial massage, color theory and makeup application. Once you complete the course, you can choose to supplement your education with makeup specialities in stage makeup, special effects, and more.
License
Once your program has ended, you will need to take your exams. Arkansas requires both a practical and written exam. Your school will help you apply, and you will apply for license at the same time. Once you have that, as well as a completed certificate of training form, you must pass the exams, and you will automatically be issued a license.

From Out-Of-State?
Many states do not have a license requirement for a makeup artist. If you are transferring to Arkansas, the State Board will need to see that your current license is up to date and valid. If you are not required a license in your home state, you’ll need to prove your education level, and you may need to sit the exams to obtain an Arkansas license.
Renew
Your license needs to be renewed every two years. No continuing education is required for a makeup artist or esthetician. You need to renew your license by the last date of your birth month, and can renew online, unless your license is more than 30 days past expiry date.

Arkansas has plenty of opportunity for a budding makeup artist. Because you’ll also need an esthetician license, you can work everywhere from medical offices, to high end salon, to theatre and television makeup.
