Your Tennessee Barber License

Once you have graduated from a barber training program, your school will submit your exam eligibility to PSI Testing Services. You will then need to schedule your examinations.

According to the state board you must pass both a practical exam and a theory exam.

Included in the theory exam is an exam specializing on Tennessee’s laws and rules.

You must score at least a 70% on both exams to be eligible for a license. Once you have passed the exams, the testing service will issue an application for your barber license.

Out-Of-State?

If you are currently licensed as a barber in another state, you may qualify for a Tennessee barber license if you can prove your home state’s requirements match or exceed Tennessee’s licensing requirements.

You must also submit an application for reciprocity, an affidavit of work experience, and a copy of your diploma. Your license certification must come directly from your home state’s licensing board.

Renewal

Tennessee’s licensing requirements state that you must renew your license every two years.

The date of renewal is the last day of the original month of issue. You will need to complete and submit the barber renewal form either online or in the mail.

No extra classes are required to keep your license active, but keeping informed of new techniques and technology is an important way to offer the best care to your clients, and build your reputation.

TN Barber Jobs

Barbers in the state are largely self-employed and work either in established shops or in shops of their own.

You must hold a valid barber license in order to open a shop of your own.

You may also choose to work in hospitals or other health and care facilities. Most barbers underreport their earnings since it doesn’t factor in tips. The more well-respected you are in your field, the better it will ultimately be for your career, and your salary. It all comes down to finding the right fit in the workforce.
